Know the Enemies of Innovation
to Get Prepared for Challenges
Any radical innovation or change
has many internal and external
enemies.
Don't be negative or cynical, be
anticipative and constructive.
The objective is to anticipate
challenges with the
implementation plan and to turn
them to opportunities.
Look at the flop potential of
your invention. Why could it
fail? Why will your brilliant
invention or change initiative
flop? What are the barriers to
success and their root causes?
Take a very pessimistic point of
view, define the risk areas of
your implementation plan, and
imagine the worst, yet quite
possible, to get prepared for
challenges.
Team
People underperform because of
insufficient motivation,
strategic alignment, expertise
or collaboration.
Key people leave the project;
too many external stakeholders
resist to change.
Production
The prototype or the final
product doesn’t meet the
envisioned qualities because of
poor cross-functional
cross-pollination of ideas and
collaboration, or because it’s
just too difficult to produce,
or because it brings along
unforeseen huge problems.
Errors in development;
production delays; financial
problems, cost overruns.
Market
Competitive pre-emption,
barriers to entry, hostile
actions.
Customer apathy or unfavourable
perceptions; too low
cost/benefit ratio of your value
proposition; poor marketing
results.
Business failure of retailers;
changes in laws; worsened
economic conditions. |
